Teacher of Biology
Winchester College seeks to appoint a well-qualified, able, and inspiring Teacher of Biology to join a thriving and intellectually stimulating department. Biology is a highly successful subject at the College, with a strong track record of preparing pupils for Medicine and Natural Sciences at top-tier universities. The department emphasizes a skills-based approach, focusing on experimental design, microscopy, and independent inquiry. This role is equally suitable for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) or those with more experience who wish to contribute to a lively academic community and a robust extra-curricular programme.
The Role
Accountable to the Head of Science, the successful candidate will teach across all age ranges, following the Edexcel IGCSE (Years 9-11) and Edexcel A-level B (Sixth Form) curricula. The role combines high-level academic instruction with significant pastoral responsibilities within the school’s boarding community.
Your key responsibilities include:
Teaching & Academic Excellence
- Curriculum Delivery: Teach a set weekly timetable, fostering subject-specific techniques such as experimental design and scientific writing.
- Assessment: Set and mark work in accordance with school policies and maintain accurate records of pupil attainment.
- Resource Innovation: Produce and share innovative digital resources and share best practices with the departmental team.
- Examination Support: Assist with marking scholarship and entrance examinations and provide extra teaching support as required.
Communication & Professional Development
- Reporting: Write detailed pupil reports and monitor progress, providing constructive feedback to support academic growth.
- Parental Engagement: Communicate with parents regarding pupil progress during scheduled events and on an "as-needs-be" basis.
- Collaborative Growth: Participate in the school’s Professional Development Review system and attend staff meetings and parents' evenings.
Pastoral & Extra-Curricular
- House Tutoring: Act as a tutor to a group of pupils in a boarding house, nurturing their well-being and supporting their pastoral development.
- Beyond the Classroom: Contribute to the department’s rich extra-curricular life, including the Medic Society, Dissection Club, Natural History Society, or journal clubs.
- School Support: Be available to cover for absences and invigilate exams as requested by the Director of Studies or Examinations Officer.

Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Education: An excellent Honours degree relevant to Biology.
- Instructional Skill: A proven track record (or potential) for outstanding teaching and the ability to communicate complex concepts to high-ability pupils.
- Classroom Management: Strong classroom management skills and the ability to build relationships of mutual trust and respect.
- Time Management: The ability to effectively organize a demanding teaching and pastoral workload.

- Start Date: 1 September 2026 (flexible for the right candidate).
- Salary: Winchester College has its own generous salary scale (above the national scale), with Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs) for additional roles.
- Accommodation: Accommodation may be available with this position to support boarding and pastoral duties.
- Environment: Access to five fully equipped laboratories in a purpose-built Science building, supported by a dedicated team of specialist technicians.
