Domestic (35 hours)
The School seeks to appoint a dedicated and reliable Domestic to join a committed team responsible for maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and care within the College’s boarding houses. This role is essential to ensuring a comfortable and hygienic environment for our pupils. The successful candidate will be organized, energetic, and detail-oriented, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a small team. A flexible approach and the physical capability to meet the demands of a busy boarding house are central to this position.
The Role
Working in the boarding houses under the day-to-day supervision of the Housekeeper/Matron, the Domestic is responsible for the cleanliness of allocated areas and providing support during pupil meal times.
Your key responsibilities include:
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Daily Sanitization: Clean allocated areas including dining rooms, bathrooms, dormitories, classrooms, and stairways to a high standard.
- Core Tasks: Execute cleaning duties such as emptying bins, sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing, and vacuuming.
- Window Care: Periodically clean the internal glass of windows, which may involve the safe use of a stepladder.
- Safety Reporting: Immediately report any defects, safety hazards, or accidents to the Housekeeper/Matron to maintain a safe environment.
Boarding House Support
- Linen Management: Change bedding as required and assist with the turning or changing of mattresses.
- Dining Support: Help set tables and assist with serving food during house meal times, including placing serving dishes and clearing away to the kitchen afterward.
- Operational Flexibility: Cover for absent staff when required and undertake other tasks as reasonably requested by the Housekeeper/Matron.
Safety and Standards
- Training: Keep up to date with modern cleaning methods and participate in regular Health & Safety training.
- Manual Handling: Safely lift and move reasonably heavy items such as cleaning equipment and laundry bags.
- Compliance: Adhere to all school safety procedures and cleaning practices consistently.

Essential Skills & Qualities:
- Professional Experience: Experience in domestic services, housekeeping, or a similar function is preferred.
- Technical Knowledge: An understanding of cleaning practices and safety procedures.
- Work Ethic: A positive and flexible approach, with the ability to use initiative and work unsupervised when necessary.
- Physical Capability: Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the post, including lifting and manual handling.
- Teamwork: A collaborative team player who contributes to a positive team spirit.
- Organization: Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time productively.
What We Offer
- Start Date: As soon as possible.
- Hours of Work: 35 hours per week.
- Monday to Friday: 09:00 – 15:00
- Saturday or Sunday: 09:00 – 14:00
- Contract Options:
- Term Time Only: 35 hours per week during school terms.
- 52-Week Contract: During term time you will work in a designated house; outside of term time, you will support Summer Lets, Facilities, or Laundry.
- Salary: * Term Time Only: £16,955.05 (gross) per annum.
- 52-Week Contract: £22,841.00 (gross) per annum.
- (Full-Time Equivalent salary is £26,104.00).
- Payment: Salary is paid monthly in 12 equal installments and reviewed annually in September.
