The Role
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to teach PE and Games within a highly successful Sports Department. Our major sports are netball, hockey and cricket; experience of coaching at least two of these to a high standard would be highly advantageous. The position offers an opportunity to join a motivated and committed team of Physical Education teachers, and a number of other colleagues with various areas of expertise.
The School seeks someone who can actively contribute to the continuing development of the subject, within both mixed and single sex classes. A full programme of Saturday and midweek fixtures is undertaken; a commitment to the extra-curricular life of the School will be essential.
For the right candidate, there is ample opportunity to take on departmental leadership roles in future.
The School
The King’s School, Gloucester has a rich academic tradition dating back to its founding in 1541. It houses the longest-serving classroom in Europe and is held in high esteem amongst the local and wider community, winning Gloucestershire Independent School of the Year in 2020 and 2021, and being Highly Commended again in 2022 and 2023. Following the 2022 ISI Inspection, King’s was proud to be declared ‘excellent in all areas’. There is a wide-ranging sport provision, and pupils reach national levels every year.
The Department
Physical Education, delivered by a committed team of specialists, is one of the cornerstones of the School in its mission to develop well-rounded and engaging young adults. Pupils are taught in mixed classes across the 8 – 18 age range by specialist staff; the department comprises eight full-time and four part-time members, who are dedicated to both the curricular and extra-curricular needs of the pupils. The School has a strong record of pupils gaining representative honours across a wide range of sports; we are proud of the students' achievements and believe strongly that they are well supported by highly motivated and qualified coaches. Although we are very proud of our elite sportsmen and women, we are also dedicated to supporting every pupil in the pursuit of achieving their potential.
Timetable, Induction and Training
The School operates a ten-day timetable cycle, consisting of 60 periods. Full-time members of staff teach 48 periods per cycle. Early Career Teachers (ECTs) receive a reduced timetable in their first two years for training and induction. Applicants without formal teaching qualifications will be considered for this position. The King’s School has a strong record of training and developing teachers in situ, and there are opportunities for further development at every level.
King’s supports unqualified teachers in achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the Post Graduate Certificate of Education qualification whilst working at the School, and the School is fully accredited to participate in the Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel ECT Programme. ECTs are provided with a comprehensive induction and mentoring programme which supports them in achieving Qualified Teacher Status.
Main Duties
- First-class coaching of core King’s sports (netball, hockey and/or cricket) for girls from Year 4 through to Year 13, in a manner appropriate to pupils’ abilities;
- Delivery of innovative academic teaching (BTEC, GCSE and A-Level) in a manner appropriate to pupils’ ages and abilities;
- Assessing and recording students' progress in accordance with departmental and School policies;
- Developing and sharing teaching and learning resources;
- Attending and contributing to departmental meetings;
- Monitoring the work and progress of pupils, including those with specific learning needs;
- Participating in CPD to ensure coaching is up to date;
- Being proactive in exploring innovative ways of delivering Sport through the curriculum;
- Initiating and promoting links with Junior School where appropriate;
- Helping to promote partnership and links with organisations outside of King’s;
- Promoting the awareness of relevant career opportunities and experiences for students;
- Contributing to the extra-curricular life of the School through the Activities and Academic Enrichment Programme or other appropriate commitment, including fixtures after school and on weekends;
- Taking part in the pastoral life of the School as a Form Tutor or Cover Tutor;
- Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact;
- Any other tasks or responsibilities that may reasonably be assigned by the Headmaster.
Personal Profile
- A degree related to Sport or experience in the field of Sport;
- Experience of teaching at KS3-5;
- Experience of or willingness to deliver academic teaching of PE;
- Enthusiasm and passion for the subject, the School and the pupils;
- Dynamic, effective teaching strategies that engage all learners;
- Initiative and resourcefulness;
- Excellent written and oral communication, numerical and interpersonal skills;
- Excellent organisational skills, able to work under pressure, plan and prioritise own workload and remain professional at all times;
- Ability to deliver high standards, meeting all deadlines;
- Willingness to undertake further professional development;
- Further post-graduate qualifications, experience relating to PE and Games, and a PGCE / QTS are desirable.
