Decorator / Multi-trader
We are looking for a qualified Decorator / Multi-Trader to join our vibrant campus at Hurstpierpoint College.
Hurstpierpoint College is a successful independent school and a significant medium-sized enterprise in mid-Sussex with around 480 employees and a turnover of approximately £30 million per annum. The College is amongst the most successful independent schools in Sussex, comprising a Senior School, Preparatory School, and Pre-Prep with over 1,300 pupils. Over half the pupils in the Senior School are boarders (flexi or weekly).
Role Summary
The primary function of the jobholder will be to provide a comprehensive decorating/multi-trader service including minor repairs, installations and building work, interior and exterior painting and decorating in all parts of the College and residential properties. In addition, the jobholder will be expected to assist other members of the team, as required by undertaking a variety of repairs, maintenance and project work, to provide high quality, ‘right first time’, cost effective building services to the College and on occasions to other local Hurst Education Trust Schools.
This is a permanent, full-time post, 8am-4:30pm Monday to Friday.
Main Decorating Duties:
- Prepare and clean surfaces, including the removal of dirt, scale, rust, old paint, grease and other materials by scraping, sanding, washing and steam cleaning as necessary
- Repairs to internal and external walls including repairing cracks and holes
- Prepare and apply paint, stain, wallpaper, varnishes, metal coatings to desired manufacturer’s recommendations
- Painting and finishing of joinery and carpentry including renewals/repairs.
- Maintain a clean and organised work area throughout each project.
- To respond to staff / department and Estates Management requests for painting work on the facilities management system (Parago) and emails
- Communicate effectively with clients and team members regarding project progress and requirements.
- To liaise and work alongside external painting contractors to facilitate quotations, order / supply paint and materials, ad-hoc queries, snagging completed work and support the successful completion of project work
- To liaise with paint and trade suppliers to achieve the best value for money for the College in purchased paint and materials
- To keep up to date on new products and equipment and advise the Estates Manager where required on specifications and project planning
Main Multi-Trader Duties:
- To support the completion of minor building works to the College and residential accommodation including general refurbishment works, tiling, office fit-outs, roof and wall repairs and where required support the completion of bespoke projects around the College
- To complete general repairs and installations – including repairs to furniture, fixtures and fittings and installation of noticeboards, shelves and furniture
- To support the installation of kitchen and bathrooms alongside other specialist trades
- To ensure all windows and internal doors are safe and secure by carrying out minor repairs, making safe where necessary and liaising with specialist contractors and the Campus Manager on any security concerns
- To respond to staff / department and Estates Management requests for general repairs and installations on the facilities management system (Parago) and by email as necessary
- Working in traditional and historic materials as required on listed buildings
- Assemble scaffold tower or other access equipment (training provided), taking into account Health & Safety considerations.
- To respond to staff / department and Estates Management requests for multi-trader work on the facilities management system (Parago) and emails
- Plan and co-ordinate work with other trades and academic staff as required
- Check equipment is safe to use and clean after use as necessary.
Other Points:
Desirable Criteria PASMA Certification. IPAF Certification.
Experience of working on commercial painting contracts (schools, hospitals, hotels etc.).
For both interior and exterior works, may be required to work from fixed or mobile scaffolding
