Language Teacher - EAL

  • North West London
  • Harrow School
  • Part-time | Fixed Term

We are seeking to appoint a qualified and experienced teacher(s) of EAL to hold classes at agreed times, teaching listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.

Contract summary:
Contract length: Casual contract
Working weeks: As agreed, term time only
Working hours: Seven to nine hours per week depending on the number of pupils requiring lessons
Salary: Please contact the recruitment team for salary information.

The role: We are seeking to appoint a qualified and experienced teacher(s) of EAL. You will hold classes at agreed times, teaching listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. The role will also require you to write reports on the progress of boys and prepare boys for exams. The post-holder must be capable of working largely unsupervised, although advice and support will be provided by the Director of Studies, the Head of Learning Skills, and the Head of Modern Languages. The hours will be determined by the number of boys identified as in need of additional language support, along with the number of EAL teachers available to staff lessons. Typically, we have 10-12 boys who benefit from weekly one-to-one sessions lasting 40 minutes. The hours of teaching are therefore flexible, and they will be constrained by the boys’ timetables and department’s expertise. For more information please review the job description attached as a separate document to this advertisement.

The skills: The minimum qualifications are CELTA/DELTA or Trinity TESOL with experience of teaching English as an Additional Language either one-to-one or to small groups of young people. With your patient, positive personality you will build a rapport and culture of mutual respect with pupils, designing bespoke activities that motivate them to learn and succeed. You will ideally have experience of assessing pupils’ language abilities and preparing them for EAL exams.

The benefits include:

  • free parking
  • automatic enrolment in the School’s pension scheme
  • use of the School’s sports facilities such as the swimming pool, gym, and running track.
  • subsidised membership of the tennis, golf, angling and social clubs.

The environment: Harrow School is situated in Harrow on the Hill, northwest London, and is one of the best-known schools in the world. Around 835 boys study at Harrow and live in the School’s 12 boarding houses. The Modern Languages Department is a large and thriving department in a purpose-built building looking out over the city of London. We teach seven languages on the timetable (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish) and a further seven languages off the timetable: Arabic, Cantonese, Farsi, Modern Greek, Polish, Portuguese, and English as an Additional Language. There is a lively culture of societies and other activities.

Applications will be processed as they are received and interviews may take place before the closing date, so early application is recommended.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are values that are important to us at Harrow. We believe in diversity of thought and actively welcome everyone regardless of their background to bring their valuable and relevant skills to our community.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All successful applicants must be willing to undergo enhanced child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with any past employer and the Disclosure and Barring Service, and it is an offence to apply for the role if the applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.

No member of staff will be able to start until these checks are complete and this process takes, on average, a month. Please plan accordingly.
